Mirror Therapy Reduces Symptoms of Phantom Pain

A recent study by the researchers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C found that viewing the reflected image of an intact limb in a mirror can fool the mind into thinking that a lost leg/foot still exists and can dramatically relieve phantom limb pain.
Nine out of ten amputees report feeling sometimes-severe pain in the missing limb, often the result of a sensation that the arm or leg is stuck in the wrong position. The sensation can be excruciating, and pain drugs often do little to help.

Sprinter Rick Ball wins 5th Place in 400-metre Final at Para Pan-Am Games!

Sprinter Rick Ball of Warminster got his first taste of the international event by finishing fifth out of eight finalists in the men's amputee 400-metre final in a time of 59.03 seconds. Inspired by the determination of Canadian icon Terry Fox, Ball began long distance running in 2007, under the guidance of Orillia coach Roger DePlancke. He has since been carded as an elite para-athlete by Athletics Canada in the T44 category. In September, Ball was named to Team Canada for the Pan-Am Games. Welcome Prosthetic Resident, Kim Morrison

      Welcome to Kim Morrison who joined our staff in September as a prosthetic resident. Kim received her Bachelors of Science in Biology and Biochemistry in 2006, a post graduate diploma in Prosthetics & Orthotics in 2011 and is working towards a Masters of Rehabilitative Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics.

       Kim has had a diverse experience in this field, both in Canada and around the world. She has worked in Sydney, Australia with the Australian Paralympic Team, in Cambodia with landmine survivors, and in various healthcare facilities across Canada. She has been involved in Prosthetic Research and has a keen interest in providing cutting edge prosthetic technologies. Welcome to the Team, Kim!

Rick Ball Heads to the Para Pan-American Games

rillia-based single-leg runner Rick Ball will be representing Canada at the 2011 Para Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico from November 12th to November 20th. Rick has been running competitively since 2008 and was named Ontario's 2010 male athlete with a Disability of the Year at the Ontario Sport Awards in April. His list of athletic accomplishments include completing the Ottawa Marathon in record-breaking time, completing the Boston Marathon, and competing at the national level in the Men’s 10-Thousand Metres event at the Canadian Track and Field Championships.
